Sound Installation, 2020, six-channel video audio installation with six interactive upside-down umbrella lights
The female non-verbal sounds deriving from 15 hours interview of Chinese unmarried professional women is flowing through the public space. We can never see but listen to them when standing beneath each umbrella, to sense and understand their singleness. At this moment, sounds "in the umbrellas" are not from only six single women any more, they are the symbolism of the "leftover" women.
Women in the Umbrellas is an interactive sonic installation that focuses on intimate narratives and listening to portraits of Chinese unmarried professional women from six upside-down umbrellas. The installation aims to explore how to account for their real desires for romantic relationships and to facilitate discussions on gender equality among the audience.
